Answers, straight up.
Service-specific questions live on each service page. This page handles everything else — about us, how scheduling works, and what to expect.
Real questions, real answers
The questions new customers ask before they call.
Are there rebates available for IAQ upgrades?
Often, depending on the product and time of year. We check for active manufacturer and utility rebates on every quote and stack what applies onto your project.
Are these reviews real?
Yes. The featured reviews on this page are pulled from verified Google reviews left by actual Sumter-area customers. We don’t write our own reviews, and we don’t pay for them. The “verified” designation under each review confirms it came through Google’s platform with a verified account.
Are you really family-owned, or is “family” just marketing?
Genuinely family-owned and going on the second generation of technicians who grew up around the business. We’re not a franchise, not part of a roll-up, not owned by private equity. The owner answers the phone. The same techs return for the next call.
Can I leave a review even if my service wasn’t recent?
Absolutely. Reviews from years ago are still valuable — they show how the relationship held up over time. Google’s review system doesn’t put a cutoff on it.
Do I need a whole-home system, or will one product fix it?
Depends on the issue. One symptom often means one fix. Multiple symptoms, allergies, or respiratory concerns usually mean a combined approach pays off faster. We’ll tell you honestly which applies to your home rather than upselling a package you don’t need.
Do I need to be home for a site survey?
For unit replacement block loads, a site survey is required to properly capture your home’s actual construction details — insulation, window type, orientation, and more. Alternate pricing is available if a licensed contractor completes the survey on your behalf.
Do these products come with a warranty?
Yes. Manufacturer parts warranty comes with the equipment, which we register at install, plus our standard labor coverage on qualifying jobs.
Do you only install Tempstar systems?
No. We’re a Tempstar® Elite Dealer because we install and service a lot of Tempstar — but we work on every major brand: Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Goodman, Rheem, Ruud, York, Amana, Mitsubishi, Daikin, Fujitsu, Bryant, Heil, Comfortmaker, Payne, and the rest. Repairs are brand-agnostic; installations we’ll recommend based on what’s right for your home.
Does South Carolina actually require a load calculation?
Yes. SC code requires Manual J & S for all unit change-outs, and Manual J, S & D for new homes and additions. The calculation must be performed by a SC licensed contractor or a SC licensed professional engineer.
How do you handle negative reviews?
We respond, we ask what went wrong, and we work to fix it. Sometimes the answer is a refund. Sometimes it’s a return visit at no charge. Sometimes it’s an acknowledgment that we genuinely got something wrong. We don’t dispute reviews to get them removed — if a customer felt the experience wasn’t five-star, that’s information we want, not something to fight.
How long has Advance Heating & Air been in business?
Since 1986 — nearly four decades. Benton Young founded the company in Sumter and built it from a one-truck operation to a Tempstar® Elite Dealer with a full crew of NATE-certified technicians.
How much does a load calculation cost?
Block loads for unit replacement start at $450 for one unit. Room-by-room calculations with duct design for new construction start at $300 for a one-level, one-system home. Larger homes carry a percentage premium. Exact pricing depends on job complexity — see our pricing breakdown above.
How much does a whole-home IAQ system cost?
It depends on what you need. A single filtration upgrade runs a few hundred dollars installed; a fully layered system covering filtration, purification, humidity, and ventilation typically runs $3,000–$6,000. Every quote is itemized by category so you can see what each piece costs.
What areas do you serve?
Sumter and the surrounding communities — Dalzell, Manning, Camden, Mayesville, Pinewood, Rembert, Shaw AFB, Summerton, Wedgefield, and the rural addresses in between. See the full service area map →
What do you need from me for new construction?
For room-by-room calculations, we need your new construction drawings along with a completed survey sheet. From there we run the full Manual J, S & D package, including duct design.
What does “Tempstar® Elite Dealer” actually mean?
It’s Tempstar’s highest dealer designation — earned by installers who meet strict standards for technical proficiency, ongoing training, and customer satisfaction over time. Practically, it means we have direct factory support, can offer Tempstar’s extended warranties (including the 10-Year Labor Warranty), and stay current on every new product they release.
What’s NATE certification?
North American Technician Excellence (NATE) is the largest non-profit technician certification in the HVAC industry. NATE-certified techs have passed rigorous exams covering theory, diagnostics, and installation practices — and they have to recertify periodically to stay current.
It’s the industry standard for proving a tech actually knows what they’re doing.
What’s the difference between a block load and a room-by-room calculation?
A block load calculates the total load for the whole house or unit and is typically used for straightforward unit replacements. A room-by-room calculation with duct design breaks the load down by individual room and is used for new construction and additions, where duct sizing (Manual D) is also required.
What’s the difference between a filter and a purifier?
A filter is a physical barrier: air passes through and particles get caught in the media. Higher MERV ratings catch smaller particles. A purifier actively treats the air with UV light or photocatalytic oxidation to neutralize biologicals and odors that filters can’t catch. Most whole-home systems use both.
Where else are reviews published besides Google?
Google is our primary review platform. We also encourage customers to share their experience on Facebook and via word-of-mouth referrals — which, for a 38-year-old local company, are still where most new customers come from.
