Why portable purifiers have limits
A portable HEPA purifier in a bedroom filters the air in that room — roughly 150–300 square feet depending on the model. The rest of your house keeps circulating the same air it always did. If the goal is improving air quality throughout a 2,000 square-foot home, you’d need 6–8 portable units and the electricity and noise that comes with them.
Whole-home solutions work through your existing ductwork, treating every cubic foot of air that moves through the system — automatically, silently, without taking up floor space.
The four categories of whole-home solutions
1. Media filtration (MERV 11–16)
A 4–5 inch media filter installed at the air handler captures particles the standard 1-inch filter misses: fine dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores. These need to be replaced every 6–12 months but don’t restrict airflow the way high-MERV 1-inch filters do. Good first step for most homes.
2. UV germicidal lights
Installed inside the air handler near the coil, UV-C lights continuously irradiate the coil surface and passing air. They reduce biological growth on the coil (a common source of musty smells) and can reduce viable mold and bacteria in circulating air. They don’t capture particles — they neutralize microorganisms.
3. Electronic air cleaners (EAC)
EACs use an electrostatic charge to capture particles smaller than what media filters can catch — down to 0.1 microns, including smoke particles and some viruses. They require periodic cleaning (wash the collector cells every 1–3 months) but don’t need filter replacements.
4. Whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers
Humidity control is a separate but related category. South Carolina summers routinely push indoor relative humidity above 60%, which promotes dust mite populations and mold growth. A whole-home dehumidifier (or a properly sized variable-speed system that dehumidifies well) addresses this at the source.
What most homes actually need
For the majority of Sumter-area homes: a media filter upgrade and a UV light covers the bases well. Add a dehumidifier if humidity is a persistent problem. Electronic air cleaners are worth considering in homes with asthma, allergies, or immunocompromised occupants.
We’ll assess what you have and make a recommendation that fits the home, not one that sells the most add-ons.
