System is 12+ years old
Residential AC systems in our climate typically last 12–15 years. Past 10, you’re on borrowed time — and borrowing gets more expensive every season.
A properly sized AC installation in Sumter, SC pays for itself every summer through better comfort and lower energy costs. Every installation we quote starts with a Manual J heat-gain calculation because an oversized system short-cycles, can’t control humidity, and wears out sooner.
Repair cost approaching replacement? Ask about financing. An oversized AC short-cycles, can’t remove humidity effectively, and wears out the compressor years before it should. An undersized system runs constantly and struggles to keep your home comfortable during the hottest days. The trick isn’t picking the biggest unit your budget allows — it’s picking the right one for your home’s real load.
As a Tempstar® Elite Dealer, we install the full performance range — from the entry-tier Performance Series to the premium Ion™ variable-speed systems that deliver whisper-quiet humidity control on the worst August days. We also install Mitsubishi ductless systems for additions and zones without ductwork. Every install includes duct inspection, refrigerant charge by weight, and manufacturer warranty registration.

Once you’ve put $1,500+ into a system in 12 months, replacement usually pencils out within 2–3 cooling seasons. We’ll do the math with you.
An old 10-SEER system uses roughly 50% more electricity than a modern 16-SEER. That’s real money every month from May through September.
If your AC runs all day and never quite hits the thermostat setting on 95°+ days, it’s lost capacity — and a tune-up won’t bring it back.
R-22 has been banned from production since 2020. Remaining supply is dwindling and expensive. Any R-22 system that needs a recharge is a strong replacement candidate.
Rattles, grinding, rust spreading on the outdoor cabinet, condensate stains on the ceiling — the system is telling you it’s time before it fails entirely.

Frequently Asked
Most full AC replacements in our area land between $5,500 and $11,000, fully installed. Every quote is itemized and in writing, with financing options included. The range reflects equipment tier (SEER rating), house size, and whether ductwork needs attention.
The right answer is a Manual J heat-gain calculation — we measure square footage, ceiling heights, window count and orientation, insulation level, and duct condition. Sizing by square footage alone typically produces oversized systems that short-cycle, can’t pull humidity, and wear out early.
SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) measures cooling output per watt of electricity over a season. The federal minimum in SC is currently 15 SEER2. Mid-tier runs 16–18 SEER; premium reaches 20+. In our climate, upgrading from an old 10-SEER system to a modern 16-SEER cuts your cooling electricity roughly in half.
In our climate, the math on a 17–18 SEER system typically pays back the premium over a standard unit within 5–7 cooling seasons through lower electric bills. We’ll show you the actual numbers for your home during the estimate.
A straight AC replacement is usually a one-day job — typically 6–8 hours from arrival to clean-up. If ductwork repairs are needed at the same time, plan on a day and a half.
Yes. Every install includes a duct inspection, and we repair or replace problem sections as part of the project. Installing a high-efficiency system into leaky or undersized ductwork throws away the efficiency you just paid for.
If your system is more than 10–12 years old, requires frequent repairs, or struggles to keep your home comfortable, replacement may be the more cost-effective option. During your estimate, we’ll explain your options honestly and help you compare repair costs with the long-term benefits of a new system.
We install high-quality Tempstar® heating and cooling systems and are also authorized to install Mitsubishi ductless mini-split systems. We’ll recommend equipment based on your home’s needs, efficiency goals, and budget.
The right system size depends on much more than your home’s square footage. We perform a Manual J load calculation that considers insulation, windows, ceiling height, sun exposure, and other factors to recommend the properly sized system for your home.
In many cases, yes. Today’s high-efficiency air conditioners use significantly less energy than older systems, especially if you’re replacing equipment that’s more than 10–15 years old. The exact savings depend on your home’s size, your existing equipment, and your usage habits.
